We are so STUPID!! GAW!!

Even when we try to do a story that could actually help people, we have our critics.  This person that emailed us is an idiot:

Question/Comment: I've just watched the 11pm news tonight (Dec 29) and the story about victim Beverly Hope that was run off the road, raped, and killed. Following the story was coverage about self-defense classes for women in which video clips were shown of the techniques used by victims. Although information should be provided about self-defense course times and locations, techniques used by victims SHOULD NOT SHOWN ON TV TO POTENTIAL PREDATORS. Predators now know several techniques their victims may use to counteract their attacks. Smart move.

Surely this person isn't serious.  Does he really think all the predators are out there watching local news in anticipation of learning new ways their victims are going to defend themselves?  I bet they are out there with their notepads (and Boogie Boards) ready to copy down all the moves.

Then, after they watch all the newscasts and pick up all the moves they go to their basement to learn new techniques.  They probably have gym mats spread out all over the floor with a bunch of mannequins.  It takes hours and hours of practice to get the counter moves just right.

Come on, really?

This TV business sucks sometimes.  People can be so short sighted.  This story was an effort to help people defend themselves.  Nothing more.  But in the end, we get this kind of email.  I know I've said it before but some members of our audience never cease to amaze me.

It is certainly tough to please everyone but we will keep trucking on.  We will work to help people when they need our help.  No, we can't help everyone, and please don't be mad at us if we don't help you.

There is a precise formula to this; put in at least 1 part human characteristic, 1 part good video, 1 part viewer benefit and 1 part station payoff and shake-shake-shake.

That station payoff part is a bit sensitive, eh?  Let's be honest, we have to get something out of the deal too.  We need to help you so we can run the promos to prove to you that we are doing our best to be a positive part of this community.

The promo spot will run over-and-over just in case you forget how much we help you.  But in the end, you always get what you want.  Well, sometimes at least.

By the way, it took me forever to write this because some idiot called the station wanting the time of the USC basketball game tomorrow.  I took his number so next time I had a random question about some random topic I would just call him.
